Square has a reputation for some of the best games ever made. But whenever they stray from the RPG games, they come up less then perfect many times. And I m afraid The Bouncer is one of them.
The story takes place in a future world. Three bar bouncers named Sion, Volt and Kou are enjoying a day at the bar when a young girl he takes care of shows up to talk with Sion and his friends.
Then all chaos breaks loose when Hi tech Ninjas of sorts break in and kidnap his young friend.
Sion and his friends go after these Ninjas and uncover the conspiracy to her kidnaping.
The gameplay is 80% movie and 20% gameplay. You watch a movie or cinema, then you choose a character and play an arcade fighting game. After a fight you earn points to buy power-ups and new moves. The fighting is extremely simple and really has little challenge.
The FMV is like in all Squaresoft games, beautiful to watch in every way. The cinemas are okay, but don t move or feel real.
Every thing is real voice acted and horrible I might add. With corny dialog that takes me back to Resident Evil. The game takes fewer then two hours to beat, but there is some replay due to the story changes a little depending on the characters you pick before each fight. This opens new characters in the multi player. And the multi player is nothing to get excited over.
When I heard The Bouncer was a fighting game, I was hoping it would be a game more like Ehrgiez.
A 3D Tekken style fighter with new and past Square Characters, instead we get a movie with some Fighting Force style fighting. If you cut all the movies, this would be a thirty minute game.
The Bouncer is a renter at best. Rent it, see it once then take it back and wait for Final Fantasy 10.
